FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MAKE POVERTY HISTORY “BANQUET”
SINGAPORE – ONE (SINGAPORE) – a society dedicated to raising public awareness and taking concrete actions to Make Poverty History – is holding a Hunger “Banquet” on Wednesday 20 September to drive home the nature and randomness of poverty. This “Banquet” will be co-hosted by and held at MTV, which supports the call for action against poverty and has a long history of providing a platform in support of pro-social issues.
Singapore, Singapore 2006-09-20Brought to Singapore for the first time, the Make Poverty History "Banquet" is a powerful
simulation game that uses visual representations and role-playing. Participants will have the
opportunity to vividly experience emotions that are raised when faced with poverty as well as
to think more about poverty’s causes.

“The root causes of hunger are not about a lack of food. Our planet produces enough food to
feed every woman, man, and child,” says ONE (SINGAPORE) President Michael Switow.
“Fair trade, debt relief, fighting corruption and additional resources for basic needs –
education, health care, clean water and food – will transform the future and hopes of an
entire generation.”
MTV, in support of pro-social issues, regularly offers its audiences opportunities for direct
dialogue with leaders. “We’re glad to be able to contribute for a worthy cause such as this, to
help spread awareness of poverty to Singaporeans and the world delegates congregated here, “ said Christopher James, Senior Vice President, General Manager, MTV Networks Asia (SEA).
MTV's other pro-social activities include the award-winning Staying Alive campaign, a multimedia global HIV and AIDS prevention campaign launched in 1998.
MTV will also further support ONE (SINGAPORE)’s Make Poverty History campaign by broadcasting the 30-sec Singapore CLICK Video clip (English version) on the MTV Channel from 23 October to 5 November 2006.
The CLICK Video, featuring foreign and local celebrities, was launched to raise awareness of child poverty in the Make Poverty History campaign. “As MTV reaches more than 300 million households in Asia Pacific, we hope to significantly extend the outreach of the campaign by generating awareness amongst MTV’s target audience.” said Tan Sian Ju, Senior Director and Head of Creative and Content for MTV Networks Asia (SEA).
As the World Bank and International Monetary Fund Annual General Meetings come to a
close, ONE (SINGAPORE) calls on the international financial institutions – and the thousands of delegates who have travelled from overseas to attend – to give developing nations a greater voice and to take heightened steps to eradicate poverty.
We also call on Singaporeans to become more involved in the community and to offer aid and opportunities to the poor both at home and overseas.
More than 190 United Nations members have signed on to the Millennium Development
Goals, a set of time-bound concrete targets to halve abject poverty by 2015 and eradicate it
completely by 2025. People around the world are calling out en masse for these signatories
to follow through at a faster rate with their commitments and obligations to make poverty
history.
In addition, the World Bank and the IMF can do more to alleviate the debts of the world’s
poorest countries and reduce the number of conditions attached to their loans. In cases
where debts have already been cancelled – thanks in part to pressure by civil society groups
around the world last year – developing countries have found new resources to dedicate to
basic livelihood issues.

Time: 7:00 pm arrival; 7:30 pm event starts

“As a community – and as individuals – we can eradicate poverty, eliminate hunger and
create a better safer world for all. ONE by ONE . . . by ONE!” says Switow.
